Beauty in Your 50's

By Makeda

Nowadays, thankfully, a woman in her fifties is not considered old. A woman in her fifties is just reaching the prime of life! A fifty-something year old woman can be incredibly sexy and fabulous. If you've neglected yourself before, it is not too late to start exercising, look into what styles and colors of clothing suit you best, get a great haircut and use some artful make-up to make yourself as attractive and fresh-faced as possible. At this time in your life, if you are a mother, your children are most likely either leaving the nest or are independent enough to do many things for themselves. You have the space now to devote to yourself and you deserve it!

Right now, you'll begin to notice that things are starting to look a little "gray." Not just your hair (if it's starting to gray), but also your skin tone starts to lose its youthful glow. It's easy enough to color your gray hair, of course. You can also help your skin look younger and fresher by adding color. Now is the time to take a bit of care in how you apply your make-up - if you've never taken any lessons or paid much attention to your make-up before, do it now! But don't overdo it - wearing too much make-up can make you look older because it can settle into fine lines or will look like you're trying very hard to make yourself look younger, which is never attractive.

As your skin becomes drier, switch to a much thicker, creamier moisturizer. A creamier foundation will also help in that regard. I would not do a tinted moisturizer because it will not offer much coverage and I would not try for an oil-free or powder foundation, as they can cause your skin to look even drier and flaky. Your blush should be a bright shade - one that will offer a fresh "pop" of color to your cheeks. Use pencils on your lips and eyes to really define your features. It's also good to fill in your brows, to give your face a good "frame" - a soft brown or taupe shadow should do the trick. Stay away from shimmery shadows, which can call attention to any wrinkles around your eyes.

Here are a few looks for you to try as you revel in your fabulous fifties!

Sexy and Sultry
Fill in your brows with a soft, neutral shade, like brown or taupe. Apply concealer to your undereye area, any areas of redness and any blemishes. Apply foundation appropriate to your skin color. Set your foundation with powder - use colored powder, instead of white translucent powder, which could leave any but the palest skin looking chalky. Using a matte purple shadow, apply it to your lid, then apply a lighter matte violet shade from your crease to your browbone, then add a pearly shadow to your browbone as a highlight. Use black liner on your eyes. Curl your lashes and apply black mascara. Use a sheer pink or red blush. Line your lips with a wine-colored liner and fill in with berry lipstick. To highlight your cheekbones, add a lovely golden powder up to your temples. (For lighter skinned women, try neutral colored shadows, lighter lip liner and a rosier highlighting powder.)

Flirty and Fabulous
Apply concealer under your eyes and fill in your brows with pencil or powder. Apply foundation with a sponge. If you have a rounder face and would like to contour, apply bronzer along your hairline, the bridge of your nose, and under your cheekbones. Apply a copper shadow to your eyelid and a golden shadow in the crease. Use an ivory colored shadow as a highlight. Using a dark brown liner, line your top and bottom lashes. Curl your lashes and apply mascara. Use a bronzy blush on the apples of your cheeks and line your lips with a neutral lip liner. Fill in your lips with a bronze lipstick.

I hope you like this tips, ladies! Be fierce and fabulous!
