Prior to the event I had some concerns that every single performer would be in a fusion-tribal-gypsy-Rachel Brice vein, and indeed this was definitely the prevailing style. However, there was certainly enough diversity in the performers to keep things from being monotonous.
Somewhat to my surprise, there were still quite a few Oriental performances, both classical Arabic and classical AmCab plus modern Egyptian. The show is a blur in my mind now (I worked the event for the entire 3 days, so actually it was already a blur by Sunday night!). Still, a few special performances linger in my memory (and my written notes on my program!) No slight is intended if I omit some names - there are so many performances it is impossible for me to keep track of all of them.
In the Oriental style there were lovely shows by our own Alexia, Farasha, and Oreet, plus Shadiyah (?sp) from D.C. and Sharia and Shayda from North Carolina. Siraca of NYC also did some great old-school cane as she admirably filled an open slot on Saturday morning. (There seemed to be a lot of program changes at this event, which sometimes made it difficult to keep track of who was dancing).
Willow from Saugerties and Tasha from PA did wonderful shows to live music. Vadalna with Manhattan Tribal and Sarah Johannson Locke with Alchemy showcased what I would term "Classic Tribal". The hypnotic Sera performed her own compelling brand of East Coast Tribal. BellyQueen was memorable in their beautiful purple costumes and Sivasa and the Saidi Wind Ensemble REALLY kicked it old-school style, using some of my favorite George Abdo music in the process. Jessica, Emilia and Melinda performed a rich oriental choreography under the direction of Morgiana Celeste, and the Nubian Moon Daughters showed their usual combination of precision, high energy, and irresistible groove.
Obviously, there were plenty of enjoyable shows at Spring Caravan. However, two performances really stood out as my absolute personal favorites. Wearing a rather shapeless, simple, black dress, and using a floating peach veil, Ranya was like a breath of fresh air. No style can be assigned to her performance - she simply WAS "Dance". It seems so simple, and yet it utterly beautiful and joyous.
Finally, the most outstanding performance award (at least to me) has to go to Dalia Carella. I have seen Dalia perform on a number of occasions, but this show was extraordinary. Drawing on her superb stagemanship, and her vast repetoire of movements and styles, Dalia commanded the entire Ukrainian Hall. Even though she was dancing to Djinn, I initially assumed that they had rehearsed this act together before. No! It was absolutely one of the most brilliant improvisational performances that I have ever seen, and believe me I have seen plenty. At one point I looked down at my arm, and I had goosebumps. Inspiring and incredible!

The mermaid girls were actually jellyfish and thanks for praising our costumes!! My dancing partner, Katie, made them..right down to the hand painted silk scarves.
