Belly dancing rolls in Chico
Issue date: 2/21/07 Section: Entertainment
Chico's Origin Tribal Belly Dance troupe is gearing up for its live performance Friday at Lost on Main. The show is part of the "Integration" dance party with Oakland's Lloyd Family Players, a group that incorporates hip-hop breaks with drum 'n' bass.
Origin will also be performing March 1 at Duffy's Tavern.
Belly dancing is a type of folk dance that began in the Middle East and has evolved over time.
The origin and performance methods of traditional dances are unknown.
The Zar dance is a traditional dance about spiritual cleansing, said Sarah Adams, Origin's troupe director. Some belly dancers think demons make their hips move the way they do. As the demons travel up their bodies, the belly dancers move in different directions as the demons escape through their hair.
"Not knowing where the dances come from we have no way of knowing if these legends are true or not," Adams said.
Adams has been a belly dancer for 11 years and started her troupe two and a half years ago. She teaches belly dancing classes for dancers of all skill levels.

Though I'm happy that the Orion highlighted bellydance in this article, I am mis-quoted here. I don't think that bellydancers believe that demons make your hips move. (Continued…)
