Woman finds fitness, spirituality in belly dancing
Leigh Shelle Robertus, Tribune
For Scottsdale resident Linda Marrese Haag, belly dancing is personal. “It means something different to everyone, whether it be exercise or spiritual,” the 39-year-old Phoenix native says of the dance."
Haag began belly dancing lessons locally 17 years ago.
“I like the music and the beauty of it and how it changes with you. You’re constantly learning something new about your body. It transforms you,” she said.
After a few years, Haag began performing professionally. A decade into dancing, she began instructing. “I put myself through school belly dancing,” she said of the Bachelor of Arts degree in communications she earned from Arizona State University in 1999. She is now a belly dance instructor at the Scottsdale Jewish Community Center, Scottsdale Parks & Recreation and 5 Elements Gym in Tempe, “My love is really teaching and seeing women progress to achieve a personal goal,” she said. “I love having people look forward to my class.”
Haag says the statement that embodies belly dancing for most is something her mentor, Badia, once said.
“There is a dancer for every occasion and an occasion for every dancer.”
